When You Feel like There's Not Enough

There’s not enough. That seems to be the motto repeated by most of us as we venture through this world day after day. Not enough time. Not enough money. Not enough space. Not enough sleep. Not enough talent. Not enough room. Not enough fun. Not enough interest. Not good enough, not smart enough, not funny enough, not fast enough, not efficient enough, not loud enough. Not enough. Not enough. Not enough.

Type enough enough times and it begins to look absurd.

As absurd as the idea that we must live our lives from a place of scarcity.

As absurd as the idea that on this enormous planet spinning through an enormous solar system within an enormous galaxy placed inside an enormous universe held by an enormous God there is somehow not enough.

As absurd as the idea that Jesus was somehow joking when he told us he came to bring us abundant life.

But absurd or not I continue to find myself captive to the belief that there are insufficient resources to live this life well.

I want to be a writer but I don’t have enough followers, enough experience, enough of a platform, enough likes, enough time.

I want to have rich, meaningful friendships but there is not enough space for me in the lives around me, and I am not outgoing enough to work my way into a community.

I want more time at home with my husband but there he does not have enough hours in our days and our attentions become divided.

I want to experience deep intimacy with Christ but I am not good enough at praying, not wise enough to understand him, not consistent enough in my study of scripture, not devoted enough to acts of service for his cause.

And so I go through my days grasping and striving and jealous and throwing self-pity parties because I’ve convinced myself that the verse about abundant life is really a myth and the world we live in doesn’t have enough for all of us.

The thief comes to steal and kill and destroy.

He steals our confidence that God will provide everything we need.

He kills our joy by the constant whispers of comparison.

He destroys our lives when we choose to believe his lie that there is not enough.

But I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

It’s true. You will run out of time. Your money is not endless. You may not succeed as you had planned. People will disappoint. You may be rejected. There is hunger, there are broken relationships, there are days that you will be tired.

But none of this can overshadow the truth that God is enough.

His strength is enough when you are depleted. His fellowship is enough when you are lonely. His provision is enough when you are poor. His foresight is enough when your plans are upset. His comfort is enough when you are depressed. His love is enough when you are hurt. His life is enough when yours is empty.

God is enough. And so regardless of what isn’t enough we are given the opportunity to live out of abundance. The myth of scarcity is tossed into the wind and we throw back our heads and let our faces be warmed by the light of the sun. By the light of his face that graciously fills our days.

Beautifully written…. My (Nigerian) name pretty much means ‘God is enough’ and this is a wonderful reminder that we need nothing outside of God for He is enough to satisfy our hearts and soul. Thank you for sharing

The world and society can overwhelm us with a lot of expectations and validations. Sometimes we don’t see ourselves for who we are but by what we have and that is were not being enough destroys us. But God looks at us without our titles and possessions and loves and accepts us for who we are. We are enough for Him and He is enough for us. Thank you for a wonderful post.
