I want to be a healthy human being. You know, one that lives productively and contributes meaningfully to society. But it takes a lot of effort to fight the regular urge I have to sit on the couch and eat pop tarts all day. In my quest to wholeness, healthy living, and slaying the pop tart craving beast inside my soul I have found seven things that, when integrated into my daily life, keeps the couch sitting to a minimum and allows holistic living to become a possibility.
1. Open up the word and invite Christ in to the day
Because how else will we expect to be like Him and empowered by Him if we are not spending time with him and offering him the life we’re living?
2. Have a real conversation
I wish I could connect relationally with all my people every day. (I’m an introvert so it’s a small number.) But they’re spread out and we all have our busy seasons. But having honest conversations and being actively involved in one another’s journeys is something that will serve us well.
3. Move my body and fuel it well
As you may have guessed, I am a couch-sitter by nature. Honestly, I could stay there all day. But energy begets energy. My days are 100% better if I go on a run, do some yoga, or hike the mountains that are outside my door. And that snacky habit of mine (aka eat a box of wheat thins or a pint of Ben and Jerrys on a daily basis) never brings the satisfaction I think it will.
4. Devote a portion of my day to current work projects
My work days vary from day to day. Some days I work from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. without a break. Other days I don’t have to leave the house. But regardless of the schedule it is important to do something each day. We are meant to work.
5. Get outside and soak in some vitamin D
Nothing can compete with some sunshine and fresh air for enlivening your spirit and giving life to the body.
6. Do something that brings life to your soul
Maybe its something already on this list. Lucky you. For me it is usually reading, writing, playing piano, watching a movie, or sitting on the couch and sipping coffee. We are made to enjoy, not merely produce.
7. Take care of your space
Yeah, that means clean the toilet, make the bed, do the dishes, or something of the like. Nothing like a cluttered space to disrupt the attempts to lead a holistic life.
